Gardening Calendar - September/October, 2024
• As the weather cools, plant fall flowering annuals and perennials. Add colorful foliages to create interest. • FEED ALL PLANTS to help them recover from the stresses of summer, increase winter hardiness, and provide the nutrients plants can store for growth next spring. • As temperatures moderate, plant cole family plants, root vegetables, and leafy greens. • Spread compost on your lawn to increase overall health, reduce weeds, soften the soil, and preserve soil moisture. • Release ladybugs immediately for aphid control and to help avoid the sticky mess from trees they are feeding on. • Make plans for landscape improvements. The fall months are the best months for planting landscape trees and shrubs. • In October sow Topflight winter rye seed to hold soil and prevent mud in bare areas of the landscape. You can also overseed your lawn at this time. • To prevent spider mites and to increase future cold tolerance continue spraying liquid seaweed/molasses every two weeks. • Most herbs are very cold tolerant so spice up your garden with some new herbs. • To encourage maximum flowering, prune bush roses back by one third in mid-September. • Plant seeds or plants for dill and cilantro. • Begin preparing tropical plants for their move indoors. Treat the soil with Spinosad or orange oil just before the move. • Plant spring blooming bulbs such as German iris, daffodils, hyacinths, and naturalizing narcissus beginning in October. • Mulch around tender perennials, tropicals, and other cold sensitive plants. • Beautiful fall weather is on its way! Make plans for a picnic, an outdoor barbeque, a hike, or other fun outdoor activity. |
